Frogs and fishes lay hundreds of eggs at a time. However, their population is very little as compared to the number of eggs they lay. Why ?? Answer: 1. External fertilisation is generally observed in animals that live in water bodies. 2. In external fertilisation, through animals lays hundreds of eggs and release millions of sperms, all of the eggs do not get fertilised because these gametes are exposed to the water currents, wind, rainfall and predators in the water. 3. All these factors prevent the contact of eggs and sperms. 4. Therefore, in external fertilisation, production of a large number of eggs and sperm is necessary to ensure fertilisation of a few eggs.
