Initially, Calcutta was not converted as the capital of British India till 1772, when the chief governor-general, Warren Hastings, shifted all necessary duties to the town from Murshidabad, the rural Mughal capital.  Calcutta was appointed as the capital as it satisfied Britishers the most, British had been present in Calcutta for the extended time as corresponded to rest of India, also the East India company presence in Calcutta also resulted in the elaborated and alluring foundation which the British government required.

The harbors of Calcutta and the relaxation of trade and transport were, in fact, an enumerated advantage of the town being made the Capital.
