Solution :
Let , the initial velocity of gun be v m/s
Before , firing both the gun and bullet was at the rest ,So the total momentum of gun and bullet is zero.
After firing,
momentum of bullet = mu
momentum of gun = Mv
Total momentum of the gun and bullet after firing = mu + Mv
Since , there is no external force applied on the system
So , the total momentum after firing = Total momentum before firing
mu + Mv = 0
Mv = -mu
v =
-0.44m/s
The negative sign shows that recoil velocity of the gun is in the opposite direction of that of the bullet.
