Given :

  • Mass of gun , M = 4 kg

  • Mass of bullet ,m = 50g = 50 × 10^{-3} kg

  • Initial velocity of bullet , u = 35 m/s

To find :

  • Recoil velocity of the gun ?

Solution :

Let , the initial velocity of gun be v m/s

Before , firing both the gun and bullet was at the rest ,So the total momentum of gun and bullet is zero.

After firing,

\rightarrow momentum of bullet = mu

\rightarrow momentum of gun = Mv

\rightarrow Total momentum of the gun and bullet after firing = mu + Mv

Since , there is no external force applied on the system

So , the total momentum after firing = Total momentum before firing

\sf\huge\implies Mv = -mu

\sf\huge\implies v = \frac{mu}{M}

\sf\huge\implies \frac{50×10^{-3}×35}{4}

\sf\huge\implies -0.44m/s

The negative sign shows that recoil velocity of the gun is in the opposite direction of that of the bullet.
