Explanation:

The rifle and the bullet make a system. Since, there is no external force acting on it the momentum of the system should be conserved.

∴m¹ u¹ + m² u² = m¹ u¹ + m² u²

➪4 \times0 + ( \frac{50}{100} ) \times 0 = 4v + \frac{50}{1000} \times 35 \\

➪4v =  -  \frac{35}{20}

➪v = \frac{35}{80}m/s

Note:- Negative sign indicates that recoil velocity is opposite to the motion of the bullet.

Given :

  • Mass of rifle, m = 4 kg

  • Mass of bullet, m = 50 g = 0.05 kg

  • Velocity of bullet, v = 35 m/s

To find :

  • Recoil velocity of the rifle

According to the question,

➞ Momentum of bullet = Mass of bullet × Velocity of bullet

➞ Momentum of bullet = 0.05 kg × 35 m/s

➞ Momentum of bullet = 1.75 kg m/s

➞ Momentum of rifle = Mass of rifle × Velocity of rifle

➞ Momentum of rifle = 4 kg × v

➞ Momentum of rifle = 4v kg m/s

.°. Momentum of bullet = Momentum of rifle

➞ 1.75 = 4v

➞ 0.4375 = v

So,the recoil velocity of the rifle is 0.4375 m/s.
