From a rifle of mass 5 kg, a bullet of mass 50g is fired with an initial velocity
of 108 km/h. Calculate initial recoil velocity of the rifle.​

M1(mass of rifle)= 5kg

M2(mass of bullet)=50g=0.05kg

Now u1(velocity of rifle before collision=0m/s

u2(velocity of bullet before collision)=0m/s

u1=u2=0m/s. because initially both were at rest.

v2(velocity of bullet after collision)=108km/h=30m/s

Now according to the law of conservation of momentum-

Initial momentum=final momentum

M1u1+M2u2=M1v1+M2v2

5*0+0.05*0=5v1+0.05*30

0=5v1+1.5

5v1= -1.5

v1= -1.5/5= -0.3

.

So the recoil velocity of the rifle is -0.3m/s(- sign indicates that it is moving in an opposite direction)
