the initial recoil velocity of the gun

Given :

  • mass of bullet = 50 g = 0.05 kg
  • mass of gun = 5 kg
  • velocity of bullet = 30 m/s

Formula to be applied:

  • momentum = velocity × mass

Solution :

mass of the bullet = 0.05 kg.

initial velocity = 30 m/s

hence, momentum at starting point

= 0.05 × 30 m/s.

= 1.5 kg m/s

hence, recoil velocity of the gun

= momentum of bullet / mass of gun

= 1.5 kg / 5

= 0.3 m/s

hence, the initial recoil velocity of gun is 0.3 m/s
