✪ Question : From a rifle of mass 5kg, a bullet of mass 60g is fired with an initial velocity of 40 m/s. Calculate the initial recoil velocity of the rifle.

✪ Solution : Total Initial Momentum = m1u1 + m2u2

Here, since both rifle and bullet were at rest so there initial velocities were 0.

= m1(0) + m2(0)

= 0

Total final momentum = m1v1 + m2v2

= (5 kg)(v1) + (0.06 kg)(40 m/s)

= 5v1 + 2.4

Since, Total Initial p = Total Final p

0 = 5v1 + 2.4

- 2.4 / 5 = v1

- 0.48 m/s = v1

Here negative sign shows that rifle displaced against direction of motion of bullet.

✪ Answer : 0.48 m/s
