Correct Question

From an aeroplane at a height of 600 m above the level ground, the angles of depression of two ships are observed as 60° and 30° coming towards it. Find the distance between two ships.

Solution

tan60° = 600/x

→ √3 = 600/x

→ x = 600/√3 or 200√3

tan30° = 600/(AB + x)

→ 1/√3 = 600/(AB + 200√3)

→ AB + 200√3 = 600√3

→ AB = 400√3

  • Value of √3 = 1.732

→ AB = 400 × 1.732

→ AB = 692.8 m

Hence distance between two ships (length of AB) is 692.8 m.
