He asked so many questions to the intruder so that he could buy some time to think what can be done to outwit the intruder.Gerrard tells that he was also a crook like him and the intruder believed him.later he gave the intruder a push inside the cupboard and called the police. He was able to do this by using his presence of mind and by being calm.
