Answer:

the rings of cartilage prevent the collapse of the respiratory track when there is absence of air.

in multicellular org. oxygen cannot be diffused like in simple organism so have a special system for it.  

during inhalation: diaphragm contracts to increase chest cavity to let in air

during exhalation: diaphragm relaxes to its normal dome shape to push the air out.
