To find:

The ratio of AP:AB.

Solution:

  • Here ΔABC and ΔAPQ are identical.
  • As BC║PQ [ as per the diagram]
  • So, \frac{AB}{AP}=\frac{BC}{PQ}  \\or, \frac{AP}{AB}=\frac{PQ}{BC}
  • Now let assume P divides AB in a 1:r ratio
  • So, \frac{AP}{PB}=\frac{1}{r}
  • So, AB=AP+PB= (1+r)AP
  • So, AP: AB=1:(1+r)

Final answer:

AP: AB= 1:(1+r) [Where P divides AB in a 1:r ratio].
