From the formula of water, H2O, work out the valencies of hydrogen and oxygen.

Since, while making the formula of a compound, we interchange the valencies to get how many atoms of a certain element are needed in the compound, we now do the exact opposite.

 H_{2} O   is 2 H atoms and 1 O atom.

Therefore, by exchanging the subscript, we get the valency

 H^{1+} <br />  O^{2-}
