1. The poet, Brian Patten, seems to be behind all this mischievous actions as a boy. Because the poem is written in first person form.

2. The narrator blames the cat, ghosts and a magician for all the mischievous deeds. He is actually blaming others for what he has done and thus tries to conceal himself. He also tries to save himself from his mother's scoldings and goes to his grandma's house.

3. He was playing indoors and outdoors both as the poem defines muddy footprints on the mat which is only possible if the narrator played outside.

4. The mother must have wanted to punish him but couldn't do it because the narrator was not at home.

5. No, we don't like to accept responsibility for our misdeeds. Because we feel reluctant to do so. Its a human nature that we don't accept our mistake. We try to conceal our mistakes to save our dignity. We also blame others for that. Sometimes we hide them to escape the scoldings from elders.
