There are not many major peninsular rivers that flow through the west. These are Narmada, Tapi,Sabarmati, Mahi and Luni. These rivers are less important from the agriculture point of view and also these are not navigable. The reason behind this are as follows.
1) Out of these five rivers, only Narrmada and Tapi are major rivers and others are very small rivers. The mountains from where these rivers originate, are not snow covered. Hence they dry up in summers.
2) These rivers are not perennial so, there is no surety of continuous and regular water flow.
3) These rivers flow on uneven rocky surface so, they are neither navigable nor useful for agriculture.
4) These river do not bring with them enough alluvium so these are not useful for agriculture.
5) As the terrain is rocky and the banks of these rivers are high, so canals cannot be dug.
6) The rocky soil does not absorb any water, so no wells are dug. All the water flows down into the sea.
So, these rivers are less important for agricultural purpose and also these are not navigable.
