Meaning of And all the boards did shrink .In this paragraph is in the olden days the wood used to shrink when it was hot so the deck would become smaller due to which there would be leakes in the boat. the meaning of the paragraph is that there is water everywhere but they can't drink it and the weather is hot due to which the boards are literally sinking and causing leaks in the boat.
