Step-by-step explanation:

They begin after 2.5 hours. As they are walking in the same direction.

Since we have given that

Speed at which Jim walks = 3 mph

Speed at which John walks = 5 mph

As they are walking in the same direction.

So, Relative speed would be 5 mph - 3 mph = 2 mph

Distance John covers more than Jim = 5 miles

So, Time taken by them is given by

time=\dfrac{Distance}{Speed}=\dfrac{5}{2}=2.5\ hourstime=

Speed

Distance

=2/5

=2.5 hours

Hence, they begin after 2.5 hours.

Hope it helps ☺☺
