Protons are present in the center or nucleus of an atom. They are positively charged. The number of protons present is what defines each element. Hydrogen has 1. Helium has two. Lithium has 3. If any atom were to somehow gain or lose a proton it literally becomes a different element.
Take one proton from a Helium atom and it is no longer Helium but becomes Hydrogen.
