From the top of a building 20 meter high, the angle of elevation of the top of a vertical pole is 30°, and the angle of depression of the foot of the same pole is 60°. Find the height of the pole.

From Δ A D E

\tan\theta = \frac{AD}{DE}

AD = 20 m & DE = y & \theta = 30°

\tan 30 = \frac{20}{y}

y = \frac{20}{\tan30} -------- (1)

From Δ A B C

\tan 30 = \frac{x}{y}

⇒ x = y \tan 30 ----- (2)

Put the value of y in equation 2 from equation 1. we get,

⇒ x = 20

We know that height of the pole is H = 20 + x

Put the value of x in above equation we get,

⇒ H = 20 + 20

⇒ H = 40 m

This is the height of the pole.
