From the top of a light house, the angles of depression of two ships is observed to be alpha and beta. If the height of the light house is h metres and the line joining the ship passes through the foot of the light house, show that the distance between the ships is h(tan alpha+ tan beta)/tan alpha*tan beta.

tan alpha = h/AD (OR) AD = h/tan alpha ............(1)

tan beta = h/BD (OR) BD = h/tan beta................(2)

Adding (1) and (2),

distance b/w (AD+BD) = h/tan alpha + h/tan beta

                                   = h(tan alpha + tan beta)/tan alpha*tan beta
