From the top of the lighthouse, an observer
looks at a ship and finds the angle of
depression to be 30°. If the height of the
lighthouse is 100 metres, then find how far
the ship is from the lighthouse.​

since the angle of depression is 30° the angle of elevation is also 30°(interior alternate angles)

let x be the distance of the ship from the lighthouse

tan30°=perpendicular/base

1/√3=100/x

x=100×√3

x=100×1.732

x=173.2
