Anne Frank and her mother Edith Frank are two of the main protagonists in the story ‘Diary of a Young Girl’. It is often considered to be Anne’s autobiography, addressed to a fictional character Kitty, and which was published after her death by her father.

During the Nazi occupation of Holland, the Franks were forced to flee and hide in an annexe above Mr Frank’s office to escape detection from German forces. They were joined by another family, the Van Daans, who Anne found to be very pretentious, in particular Mrs Van Daan. Their joint dislike of her was the only common point of agreement between Anne and her mother.

This dislike was caused because they found Mrs Van Daan to be very pompous and complain about the smallest of things. Even though all of them were suffering together, she claimed to be the only victim of the war.
