A. The doctor insisted that the author should give up living in the town. It was essential for the author's husband to breathe the purer air of the country.
B. Some of the houses were so ugly that the author could tell that the house was not looked after.
C. The author could feel a ghodtly presence following her. She also heard the swish of skirts that she could not see.
D She had heard too many tales of the tricks that spirit occupants of houses can get up to if they were offended by the living owners. It would be uncomfortable to be on bad terms with a companion who is alive but intolerable with a dead one.
