Four Hymns by Guru Nanak

I have no friend like God

Who gave me soul and body, and infused into me understanding.

He cherishes and watches all creatures; He is wise and knows the secrets of hearts.

The Guru is like a lake; we are his beloved swans;

In the water are many jewels and rubies.

God’s praises are pearls, gems, and diamonds; singing them makes soul and body happy.

My soul is in fear; to whom shall I complain?

I have served Him who causes us to forget our sorrows; he is ever and ever the Giver.

My Lord is ever young; he is ever and ever the Giver.

Night and day serve the Lord, and in the end He will deliver thee.

Hark, hark my friend, thus shall you cross over.

O merciful One, by Thy name shall I cross over; I am ever a sacrifice unto Thee.

He who knows the two paths to be one, will alone find fulfillment;

The evil slanderer must burn in hell-fire;

The whole universe is Divine in essence-

Merge yourself into truth.

Know the Lord to be One, even though the paths be twain.

Through God’s Word learn His commandment;

Give equal place in thy heart to all human forms and castes!

Saint Nanak, only the One is worthy of worship.

A Poem by Kabir

Whys so impatient, my heart?

He who watches over birds and beasts and insects,

He who cared for you while you were yet in your mother’s womb,

Shall He not care for you now that you are come forth?

O my heart, how come you turn from

The smile of your Lord and wander so far from Him?

You have left your beloved and are thinking of others and this is

Why all your work is in vain.

A Song by Guru Angad

They who possess the greatness of Thy name, O god,

are happy at heart.

Nanak, there is only one nectar, there is none other;

Nanak, that nectar is in the heart, but it is only

obtained by the favor of the Guru;

Those who were so destined from the beginning

drink it with delight.

A Song by Guru Ram Das

They who leave the Guru, who is present with them, shall find no entrance into God’s court.

Let any one go and meet those slanderers, and he will see their faces pale and spat upon.

They who are accursed of the Guru are accursed of the whole world, and shall ever be vagrants.

They who deny their Guru shall wander about groaning.

Their hunger shall never depart; they shall ever shriek from its pangs.

No one heareth what they say; they are ever dying of fear.

A Song by Guru Arjan

Though art, O God, an ocean of water; I am thy fish...

In thee is my hope, for Thee I thirst, my heart is

Absorbed in Thee

As a child is satisfied by drinking milk,

As a poor man is happy on finding wealth,

As a thirsty man is refreshed by drinking water, so

Is my soul happy with God...

God is mine; I am his slave.
