The roots of western education reach back to ancient Greece and ancient Rome with Plato and Quintilian (Marcus Fabius Quintilianus) as prominent educators, underlining the many advantages public education could have on the socialization of a person. Plato valued the Socraticteaching method contending that knowledge would rather come from questioning than from direct teaching and he argued for differing educational requirements associated with various life stages. Quintilian believed that education should be concerned with a person’s whole intellectual and moral nature, with the goal of producing an effective person in society. He recommended a broad literary education where students would develop relationships and learn from peers.
