Let, the number be,"x"

By condition,

x-(-300)= -500

or, x+300 = -500

or, x =- 500-300

or, x = -800

(Ans): The number is -800

[ Hint:  (+)*(+) =( +)

          (+)*(-) = (-)

          (-)*(+) = (-)

          (-)*(-) = (+)  ]

From -800

Let the number be x

According to sum:

x-(-300) = -500

x + 300 = -500

x = -500+(-300)

= -800

ANSWER : -800
