The main sources that explain us about the Mauryan Empire are literary.

There are many books and the written thesis that is extracted by the people such as Kautilya's Artha Sastra, Indica, Mudra Rakshasa, Buddhist Literature, and Puranas.

Then there are archaeological sources such as Ashokan edicts, the remaining material such as copper, silver punch markers etc,

Indika by Megasthenes and Arthashastra by Kautilya are the two main literary sources of the Mauryan period. The Indika tells us about the political, social and economical administration during the Maurya's. The Arthashastra contains rules and obligations for a ruler to how to govern an empire.
