Earthquakes
- Earthquakes are tremors felt on the surface of the earth. These tremors are caused due to the disturbances that take place within the Earth's crust. These disturbances caused by collision of tectonic plates are volcanic eruptions.
- The point inside the Earth from where tremors originate is called the focus. The point exactly above the focus on the Earth's surface is called the epicenter of the earthquake. The areas around the epicenter face maximum damage caused by the earthquake.
- The tremors produced during earthquakes are called seismic waves. The intensity of the seismic waves reduces as they move away from the epicenter.
- Earthquakes are measured on a scale ranging from 0 to 9. This scale is called the Richter scale. The higher the number on the scale, the greater the intensity of the earthquake. The earthquakes that measure 6 or above on the Richter Scale are considered very devastating.
- The study of the earthquakes is called seismology. The instrument used to detect and measure the tremors produced by an earthquake is called seismometer or seismograph. The first modern seismometer was invented by an English seismologist, John Milne in 1880. The scientists who study the patterns of seismic waves are called seismologists.
