Explanation:
The term Punjab (Persian: پنجآب) is a compound of two Persian words: panj (پنج, 'five'; [pændʒ]) and âb (آب, 'water'; [ɒːb]). The word Punjab thus means 'The Land of Five Waters', referring to the rivers Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Sutlej, and Beas. All are tributaries of the Indus River, the Sutlej being the largest.
Explanation:
The word Punjab is derived from ‘Punj’ or ‘Panj’ which means 5 (five) in Persian… also ‘Aab’ means water/ waters or rivers.… The Persians gave the name Punjab to this land by referring to it as the land of five rivers…. surprisingly the word Punj or Panj is used in Punjabi too without any change and with very same meaning, indicative of the huge influence of Persian on the Punjabi. It may not be irrelevant here to add that in pre-vedic times, this area was known as ‘Sapt-sindhu’… means 7 (seven) rivers (sindhu means sea/ perennial river as well as it is the name of a major river called Sindh as this river was like a sea with a very wide spread which during the monsoon would be as much as 10 miles wide beyond Hyderabad-Sindh, thus affording navigation, transport of merchandise, fisheries etc throughout the year. The other two rivers in Sapt-sindhu were the Saraswati and Indus (Sindh). Saraswati has since dried up since a millennium or more years. But it flows in the upper reaches during monsoon flushes and is completely lost at some place near Anupgarh and sometimes seen up to Suratgarh. In the olden days, it carried waters up to the Arabian sea via Rann of Kutch in Gujrat when there were copious rains. Or otherwise, it would disappear somewhere beyond Suratgarh villages.
