no.the reason things break when water is freezing inside them,is that the water ice at freezing point has lower density than liquid water at the same temparature,thus the volume if ice is larger than the volume of freezing water.but water is rather exceptional with this property and vast majority of substances increase density (decrease volume)when freezing/solidifying.therefore the thermometer would not break from freezing alcohol in it
