Nelson Mandela was born on 18 July 1918 in the village of Mvezo in South Africa's Cape Province. As a young man, he studied law and became active in opposing colonialism.
Mandela was married three times and had six children. He wed his first wife, Evelyn Ntoko Mase, in 1944. The couple had four children together.
He worked with South African President F.W. de Klerk to end apartheid, for which the two leaders would share the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.On December 5, 2013, Nelson Mandela, the first President of South Africa to be elected in a fully representative democratic election, as well as the country's first black head of state, died at the age of 95 after suffering from a prolonged respiratory infection. He died at his home in Houghton, South Africa, surrounded by his family.
