The armature, in contrast, must carry current, so it is always a conductor or a conductive coil, oriented normal to both the field and to the direction of motion, torque (rotating machine), or force (linear machine). The armature's role is twofold. ... The second role is to generate an electromotive force (EMF).

The current is supplied to the the coil through brushes slightly pushed against the commutator.

When the electric current passes through the coil in the magnetic field produced by the permanent magnet, the magnetic force produces a torque which turns the DC motor. The commutator reverses the current direction after each half revolution to keep the coil turning.

Slip rings are used in rotating electrical assemblies to make a continuous electrical connection between stationary and moving conductors. This enables the stationary power source to transmit electrical power to the rotating component.
