Both baking powder and baking soda are chemical leavening agents that cause batters to rise when baked. The leavener enlarges the bubbles which are already present in the batter produced through creamingof ingredients. When a recipe contains baking powder and baking soda, the baking powder does most of the leavening.

Baking soda ( NaHCO3) is used in -->
1. It is used as an ingredient in antacids to neutralise the effect of extra acid produced in the stomach during indigestion and thus provide relief.
2. It is used in soda- acid fire extinguishers as it produces CO2 ( carbon dioxide) gas which extinguishes the fire.
3. Baking soda is also used in cakes and bread as it produces CO2 gas which makes the cake and bread soft.
