Cristae are unfoldings of membrane which increase the surface area of mitochondria

The outer wall is smooth, but inner wall is folded into finger - like projections called cristae. Its function is to posses enzymes for the oxidation of foodstuffs (glucose) to release energy in the form of ATP ( adenosine triphosphate).
