Epithelial tissue is a protective animal tissue. It forms continuous sheet of cells on external and internal surface of body and it's organ.

Functions of epithelial tissue -:

• Surface epithelial cells protect the underlying cells from mechanical and chemical injuries and from bacterial and viral infections.

• Some epithelial cells secrets like sweat, salive, mucus, enzymes, tears , etc.

• Intenstinal epithelial tissue helps in absorption of water and nutrients.

• Lining of kidney tubules helps in removal of waste products.

• Sensory epithelial tissue in olfactory organs and taste buds receives sensory stimuli.

• Epithelial tissue in alveoli of lungs helps in exchange of gases like oxygen and CO2 between blood and inhaled air.

• Generative epithelium and germinal epithelium that lines testes and ovaries produce male and female gametes.

• Also, epithelial tissue produces exoskeleton materials like scales, feathers, hair, nails, etc.

• This tissue also helps in rapid healing of would by its regeneration power

• Epithelial cells having cilia help in movement of various materials like dust particles in nasal passages , mucus in respiratory tract, and other things.

• It acts as selective barrier too.

Functions of epithelial cells include secretion, selective absorption, protection, transcellular transport, and sensing. Epithelial layers contain no blood vessels, so they must receive nourishment via diffusion of substances from the underlying connective tissue, through the basement membrane.
