The function of the leydig cells is to respond to the Luteinizing hormone, secreted by the pituitary gland. The LH binds to the cell surface receptors on the Leydig cells, activating the synthesis and secretion of androgens; testosterone, androstenidione and dihydroepiandrosterone.
