placenta is a thick and spongy smooth lining of tissue that is made on the wall of uterus when the egg of human female is fertilized with the male gamet...its function is that it gives nourishment to the growing emryo.

It develops about 12 week after conception and allows for the safe exchange of a number of substances between mother to the foetus.
