Answer

Plasma membrane or cell membrane is the outer living boundary of cell. The term cell membrane was coined by C. Nageli.

The fluid mosaic model was proposed by Singer and Nicholson. They described it as protein icebergs in sea of lipids.

Functions of plasma membrane -

\impliesProtects the cell by acting as a barrier for unwanted substances.

\impliesRegulates the transport of substances in and out of the cell and allows only selected substances which are essential for cells to enter the cells.

\impliesReceives chemical messengers from other cell. Hence , acts as a receptor.

\impliesHelps in Cell mobility, secretions, and absorptions of substances.
