Polar bodies do not serve a purpose, they are reabsorbed and are products of meiosis. During meiosis, the initial cell divides into four gametes. In males, all four of these gametes are turned into viable sperm (hopefully), but in females, oogenesisresembles yeast budding more than it does cell division. The newly created egg contains the majority of the initial cell's mass, and the polar bodies are reabsorbed. So, I guess you could say the "purpose" of polar bodies is to provide the determinedegg with the necessary amount of materials to support life, but that's kind of puttingthe cart before the horse.
