Their thick secondary cell wall is highly lignified and very hard. Sclerenchyma is of two types, sclereids, and fibers. Sclereids are also called stone cells and their cell lumen is very narrow. They possess many pits. Fibers are elongated cells with pointed cells and they provide the main mechanical support to plant tissues.
