Leaves have tiny pores present on their surface called stomata. These help in exchange of gases required for respiration and photosynthesis. The leaf takes in carbon dioxide and gives out oxygen during the process of photosynthesis. Glucose is produced in the leaf, as a result of photosynthesis. It is stored as starch.

  • The leaf takes in carbon dioxide and water and prepares food in the presence of sunlight by the process of photosynthesis. The green pigment, chlorophyll present in the leaves, helps in the process.
  • Stomata also help in getting rid of extra water in the form of water vapour. This is called transpiration.
  • Transpiration helps plants by cooling their leaf surface and in this process the water is pulled up from the roots. This is helpful in transporting nutrient from roots to the other part of plants.
