A web browser is a client (or user agent, I don't know the specific differences) that connects to a server, using HTTP.  HTTP stands for, "Hyper Text Transfer Protocol", HTTP is pretty much like this:  client requests document from server, server responds with either the document or an error message (for instance, if a page isn't found it gives a 404, not found error)
