Explanation:

The atmosphere or our 'air' is a mixture of gases around the Earth which are held by the gravitational attraction of the planet. The gasses in the atmosphere bounce around to fill up the space that we call 'air'. So 'air' is not really nothingness, as we often think of it -- rather it is a critical part of our four earth systems.

FUNCTIONS OF ATMOSPHERE:-

  • Air has weight and exerts pressure. Being pressed down it always remain in contact with land and water.
  • Due to their physical contact, exchange of gases between air, land and water takes place on a continuous basis.
  • Soil absorbs oxygen and nitrogen due to this contact. Water vapour in air rise from oceans on account of evaporation.
  • Carbon dioxide in air helps in the absorption of heat and keeps the earth warm at night.
  • Because of its composition, the atmosphere is most dynamic entity. Large masses of air are being moved up and down and across the surface of the earth.
  • The energy of the sun is responsible for keeping the atmosphere in dynamic state.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:-

What is atmosphere-

The blanket of air surrounding the earth is known as atmosphere. It exists in several layers, around the earth. The atmosphere protects the earth from harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun.

Composition of atmosphere-

The atmosphere is the mixture of many gases and tiny solid particles. The air is made up of 78% of nitrogen, 21% of oxygen, and the 1% consists of other gases along with water vapour.
