Blood Tissue

1.0 Where in the body are blood tissues ?

The components of blood are referred to as blood "tissue" for the purposes of this page/section.

Blood tissues are found inside the blood vessels (arteries, arterioles, capillaries, venules and veins - see the systemic circulation for further details about the path the blood follows and the names of specific blood vessels) and also within the chambers of the heart.

Some white blood cells are also found in other types of body tissues, for example lymphocytes are also found in the lymphatic system.


2.0 The Structure (Physical Description) of the blood tissues

Blood consists of many components (constituents), including:

55% Plasma

45% Components, i.e. blood cells
of these 99% are erythrocytes (red blood cells) and 
1% are leucocytes (white blood cells) or thrombocytes (blood platelets).

Function of Blood

i.) It helps in transport of nutrients to all parts of the body for storage, oxidation and synthesis of new substances.

ii) It involved in the transport of excretory products like urea, uric acid and ammonia.

iii.) It helps in the transport of oxygen and carbon dioxide to all the tissues of body for respiration.

iv.) Blood acts as buffer system in our body. It helps in the regulation of pH and body temperature.

v.) It is involved in protection against diseases by engulfing the disease causing microbes by phagocytosis.

vi.) The plasma of blood helps to transport hormones from their place of synthesis to the target organs.

vii.) Platelets present in the blood form a clot at the site of injury to prevent further loss of blood.

viii.) It maintains proper water balance in the body to a required constant level. ✔✔✔✔
