It assembles the messages in a way that has meaning for us, and can store that information in our memory. The brain controls our thoughts, memory and speech, movement of the arms and legs, and the function of many organs within ourbody. The central nervous system (CNS) is composed of the brain and spinal cord.

The primary functions of the brainsteminclude relaying information between the brain and the body; supplying some of the cranial nerves to the face and head; and performing critical functions in controlling the heart, breathing and consciousness. Between the cerebrum and brainstem lie the thalamus andhypothalamus.

Cerebellum
Smooths and contract skeletal muscles. Regulates posture and balance. May have roles in cognition and language processing. (Movement and Coordination)

Cerebrum

The sensory area is involved in perception of sensory information. The motor areas control voluntary movements. The association area deals with more complex integrative functions such as memory, personality, traits, and intelligence. (Consciousness/ Thought Process/ and Memory) ; Cerebral cortex- gray matter
White matter fiber tracts

Diencephalon

Contains the epithalamus, thalamus, and hypothalamus. (Relay sensory information)

Medulla Oblongota

Cardiovascular center regulates heartbeat and blood vessel diameter. Medullary rhythmicity area regulates breathing. Inferior olivary nucleus provides instructions that cerebellum uses to adjust muscle activity when learning new motor skills. Other nuclei

Mid-brain

Superior colliculi coordinate movements of the head, eyes, and trunk in response to visual stimuli. The inferior colliculi coordinates the head, eyes, and trunk in response to auditory stimuli.

Pons

Pontine nuclei relay nerve impulses from motor areas of the cerebral cortex to cerebellum. Contains vestibular nuclei that are part of the equilibrium pathway to the brain. Pneumotaxic area and apneustic area helps to control breathing
