- Cornea-The cornea acts as the eye's outermost lens. It functions like a window that controls and focuses the entry of light into the eye. The cornea contributes between 65- 75 percent of the eye's total focusing power. When light strikes the cornea, it bends--or refracts--the incoming light onto the lens.
- Lens- The lens is located in the eye. By changing its shape, the lens changes the focal distance of the eye. In other words, it focuses the light rays that pass through it (and onto the retina) in order to create clear images of objects that are positioned at various distances.
- Iris- Together with the pupil, the iris is responsible for regulating the amount of light that gets into the eye. Too much or too little light can hamper vision. The muscular iris moves to shrink the pupil if there is too much light and widen it if there is not enough.
- Pupil- The pupil is a hole located in the center of the iris of the eye that allows light to strike the retina. It appears black because light rays entering the pupil are either absorbed by the tissues inside the eye directly, or absorbed after diffuse reflections within the eye that mostly miss exiting the narrow pupil.
- Retina- The retina is an essential part of the eye that enables vision. It's a thin layer of tissue that covers approximately 65 percent of the back of the eye, near the optic nerve. Its job is to receive light from the lens, convert it to neural signals and transmit them to the brain for visual recognition.
