Hi Roddicus from Bainbridge, GA...have a great day at school.

Thanks for connecting with Wyzant...I am her to help.

Your statement: Fundamental to understanding a particular time is history is: [I am presuming your instructor is asking you to elaborate on what you have been learning in your classes, about the factors and underlying causes of certain historical events.] I can't answer this for you, however I will give you some talking points which you can use to develop how your response. So here we go:)

by knowing what the underlying factors either leading up to or directly contributing to choices made, can give insight to whether the choices are justified or equivalent in response

if certain choices have disastrous results, feedback and review can understand why and at what point such decisions could have or should have been made or not made

if certain choices have a positive outcome, they governments, countries, political leaders can boost about their the results of their decisions.

if certain policies lead to creating advantages or disadvantages for certain segments of a country's population, perhaps it would be an item to look back upon to see if a repeat of similar decisions would be beneficial, IF one choose to validate that history or ignore it completely.

Let me point out that 'Having an understanding of a particular time in history' is significantly different from 'Accepting the factors of history at a particular time'. If one chooses to ignore or denies factors that contribute to history, it could be ignorance. More detrimental than ignoring historical factors is to deny their validity, as we now hear in the news daily, 'fake news' is to deny the facts.

this brings to mind the quote from a famous philospher, poet, and essayist: George Santayana: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

Hope this help.
