The main reason for a plant to synthesize its own food is the chlorophyll.
The same chlorophyll is the reason for the greenery of the plants too.
This chlorophyll substance is absent in the fungi and this is the reason why it cannot produce its own food.

non green plants lack of chlorophyll which is necessary to carry out the process of food referred to as photsynthesis. Therefore they depend on other organisms that is plants and animals in order to obtain food. The non-green plants like fungi,yeast etc are called heterotrophs
