Mercury is the only one metal which is found in liquid state at room temperature. It's used in thermometer because it has high coefficient of expansion. hence, the slightest change in the temperature is notable when it is used in a thermometer. it also has a high boiling point which makes it very suitable to measure higher temperatures

By the thermometer we see the temperature of a body and in it the mercury rise upwards when it is in conactwith the body or hot object
