Fusion of two nuclei in sexual cycle is called Syngamy.

  • Syngamy is a term used to refer specifically to the combination of the male and female gametes, which produces the zygote. Triple fusion, which occurs when the male gamete fuses with both polar nuclei is not regarded as any sort of syngamy.
  • Moreover, syngamy can be generally divided into three categories Isogamy,Heterogamy and Oogamy
  • Isogamy is a form of sexual reproduction in which identically shaped and sized gametes are fused. It becomes quite difficult to distinguish between male and female gametes in such situations.
  • Heterogamy is a form of sexual reproduction in which gametes of different sized are fused. Also, the division of labour is used to differentiate between the gametes. Male gametes are more numerous than female gametes despite the fact that female gametes are usually reported to be larger.
  • The gametes in an oogamy differ from one another in terms of motility. The male gamete is known as the spermatozoon and is motile whereas the female gamete is known as an oocyte and is non-mobile.
