Each year the program provides an essay topic that challenges students to think like engineers and address a social situation with a futurist technical solution. The team writes an Essay (1500 word maximum) on the assigned engineering related topic. Your City Essay should include a description of the attributes that make your city unique as well as provide a solution to the engineering problem. This year's topic is:
The Age Friendly City
Address the challenges in designing innovative solutions that can serve an urban area's older population.
What does it mean to be a senior citizen? The official definition in most countries is a person who is more than 60 or 65 years old. Beyond that, there is little else that seniors have in common. Today, a revolution in the "culture of aging" is underway, and timeworn notions of the elderly no longer fit. Older adults are living longer, staying in the workplace longer, and contributing to their communities in a myriad of ways. But aging can have its challenges. As people get older, they may experience physical and cognitive changes. Loss of mobility, visual and hearing impairments, slowed reflexes, illness, and memory loss are a few examples of changes that can create barriers to independent living and sometimes lead to isolation and loneliness. The student's challenge is to identify an age-related challenge that exists in today's urban environments and engineer two innovative solutions that allow your future city's senior citizens to be as active and independent as they want to be.
The maximum word count for the essay is 1500 words.
Tutorials and educational opportunities for teachers, mentors and students are made available throughout the fall for assistance with the essay requirements and to learn more about issues surrounding designing a city to accommodate older adults to address the essay topic. Students will cite a minimum of 3 sources of information on their reference page. Click here for the full Essay Question. See this year's rules for a list of all requirements. The Essay submittal date is Friday, December 15th, 2017.
A webinar on this topic, released by Future City-National, can be found by clicking here.
In October, our regional committee will offer a hands-on learning opportunity to discuss the topic of the year (The Age-Friendly City) in more detail. Details about that event will be forthcoming.
